Memo to Parents - June 18, 2020

I wanted to contact you one last time before we wrap up the school year.  While our June 'Stage Three' has gone well, I am sure many of you are wondering about what September will bring. Click on the title to read the full memo.

Dear Parents,

I wanted to contact you one last time before we wrap up the school year.  While our June 'Stage Three' has gone well, I am sure many of you are wondering about what September will bring.  A reminder that the Ministry of Education has established a five-stage plan for education during the pandemic:

STAGE 1

School Density Targets:

  • 100%
  • In-class instruction: K-12: 5 days per week

STAGE 2

School Density Targets:

  • K-7 - 100%
  • Grade 8-12: 40%
  • In-class instruction: K-7: 5 days per week,
Grade 8-12: 2 days per week

STAGE 3

School Density Targets:

  • K-5 : 50%
  • Grade 6-12: 20%
  • In-class instruction: K-5: 2-3 days per week, Grade 6-7: 1 day per week
  • Grade 8-12: 1 day per week

STAGE 4

School Density Targets:

  • K-12: 20%
  • In-class intsruction K-12: limited

STAGE 5

School Density Targets:

  • K-12: 0%
  • In-class instruction K-12: None

While I have no crystal ball, if current low levels of Covid-19 infections continue over the summer, we will most likely be in a 'Stage One' or 'Stage Two' in September.  Stage One is essentially full-time school for all students, and Stage Two is full time K-7 and part time in person for 8-12 students.  We are hopeful we will have direction from the Ministry in mid to late August.  With that in mind, please look for further announcements on our website and social media in that time period.  While we are continually refining our model, if school is part time we will continue to offer additional supports for students with diverse learning needs and families of ESWs.

We certainly hope that all of next year will be at Stage One, but if we are realistic there is the likely possibility that the province may cycle through the various stages during the year.  Mission teachers have demonstrated tremendous flexibility and innovation during the last three months, and I know this will continue next year as necessary.  Students and staff have already demonstrated how remarkable and resilient they are, and I am confident we can all adjust next year as needed.

We look forward to welcoming your children and you back to our school community in the fall.  In the meantime, I hope all of you have a wonderful and positive summer with your children and focus on all the good that we can see in the world. You can email me anytime with your questions (click here for Superintendent's email). Please stay healthy and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Angus Wilson, Superintendent of Schools
